Hampden-Sydney College
Hampden-Sydney College first enrolled students in November 1775. For more than two centuries, Hampden-Sydney has been faithful to the mission established by the founders – “to form good men and good citizens.”
Hampden-Sydney is a college for men. As such, the College remains aware of the learning and developmental differences between the genders. The single-sex classroom, in addition to being free of social tensions, provides young men with a learning experience uniquely suited to and focused on their needs, and the result is a higher level of engagement, participation, and understanding.
Hampden-Sydney students pursue a structured liberal arts curriculum. All participate in the College’s nationally-recognized Rhetoric Program, which stresses writing across the curriculum and requires proficiency in the written and oral expression of the English language. The College is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides a student with the intellectual background and mental dexterity necessary to succeed in a diverse and ever-changing global economy and society.
With an enrollment of over 1100 students, Hampden-Sydney draws from 40 states, the District of Columbia, and 18 foreign countries. Graduates, about half of whom attend graduate school within five years, have a history of success in a broad spectrum of professions and occupations.
Hampden-Sydney College contributes significantly to the quality of life in Southside Virginia. The College sponsors a wide variety of lectures, programs, and musical and theatrical events throughout the academic year, all of which are free and open to the public. Each summer, the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival brings world-renowned artists to Southside Virginia for two weekends of classical chamber music. Hampden-Sydney’s highly competitive and championship Division III teams provide exciting competition in the context of play purely for the love of the game.
